A delicate theatre handbill relating to a performance at The Grecian Theatre on October 13th 1870.

On this evening, Mr H A Majors (otherwise known as The Postman Artist) had booked out the hall to display his paintings, and offered some of his works as prizes at the event. In order to pull in the punters, he put on an evening of Grand Extra Entertainment. This included a four act drama entitled "Ticket-Of -Leave Man", Frank Percival sang The Death Of Nelson, there was dancing to A. Edroff's Brass Band, another drama entitled "Expected General!" and the evening was rounded off with "Rip Van Winkle". No wonder doors opened at 6pm.

These handbills were printed daily on very fine paper and very few survive.

The Grecian Theatre began life as the Eagle Inn and was converted to a Music Hall in 1825. Charles Dickens was known to be a frequent visitor and it is immortalised in the nursery rhyme "Pop Goes The Weasel". It was demolished in 1901.
