A medium sized leather bound Victorian Bible from 1855, containing the family register of Edward Gabriel Davis and his wife Lilias May Burgh. Edward and Lilias had two children, Adelaide Gabrielle Lilias (born 2nd November 1877), and Charles Edward Jesser (born 13th April 1879). Edward did not live to see his children grow up, dying only two months after the birth of Charles at The Parsonage in Mhow, India. The Bible is inscribed on the front endpaper "Edward G Davis April 1870", "Anarkullee Lahore", and is later inscribed in pencil "The bible belongs to Miss B. H. Jesser Davis" with an address near Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.
This item comes with a piece of embroidered card with a silk backing, with the text reading "Christ the [anchor] of the Soul".
The Bible itself does show some slight wear to the binding, but is otherwise tight, sound and complete. An attractive and affordable piece of family history.
