The National Comprehensive Family Bible. The Holy Bible with the Commentaries of Scott and Henry Edited by John Eadie. What makes this Bible rather special are the 35-40 superb engravings after Doré - typically striking and dramatic.
Published by National Publishing Company, London, c1875
If you are going to buy one of these Victorian Bibles be careful since the heavy front boards are often in a fragile state and prone to detaching. This particular Bible has a very firmly attached cover, is in above average condition and being offered at below average price.
** Â Heavy leather boards with gilt decoration, size 13" x 11"
**Â Â Pages 1215 +Biblical Cyclopedia
**Â Â Weight 5.85 kilos.
**Â Â All page edges are heavily gilded.
**Â Â Whole page colour Maps.
'Family Register' at the beginning has a few entries (MACK / MAILE family interest)
Contains Old & New Testaments & Biblical Cyclopedia.
Condition. The binding is good and firm, just one small repair at the base of the spine. All the binding cords are strong and the boards held tightly. The brass clasps are in good condition and work well; the front brasswork needs a clean. The text block is solid and even. A few foxing spots mostly on the edges of some pages but the pages are generally crisp, clean and bright. Lovely old Bible, ideal for family use and should be good for another 100 years.A nice Bible offered at a very reasonable price with the bonus of Doré's wonderful images.
